This is the fourth generation of Kia Sportage. First introduced as a compact SUV in the late 1990s, the model has moved steadily upmarket and the latest version is the biggest and most expensive yet. It's still reasonably good value, although it needs to be in order to compete with such well known rivals as the Nissan Qashqai, Renault Kadjar, Ford Kuga and Mazda CX-5, as well as its sister model the Hyundai Tucson. It steals a march on many of its European and Japanese rivals by offering more interior room and also carries a longer warranty than the Mazda or Hyundai. Image 1 of 37The fourth-generation Kia Sportage SUV has grown in size and offers more luxury than before The list of engines is fairly brief: there are two 1.6-litre petrols and 1.7-litre and 2.0-litre diesels, available with varying power outputs. The entry-level petrol combines front-wheel drive with a 130bhp petrol engine, but this isn't a setup that we'd recommend. Its 0-62mph acceleration time of 11.1 seconds isn't an issue in itself; it's just that the engine has to work very hard to achieve it. Returning up to 44.8mpg, it isn't especially economical, either. Put simply, the Sportage needs more power than this, so the 174bhp turbocharged petrol engine makes it much more enjoyable, cutting the 0-62mph time to 9.2 seconds. However, since it also also brings the extra mechanical burden of four-wheel drive, fuel economy suffers, CO2 emissions increase and, until the rules change in April 2017, your yearly road-tax bill will swell, too. In contrast, all the diesel models are fine – even the entry-level 114bhp engine feels as if it has plenty of power, despite its mediocre on-paper performance figures. Fuel economy of 61.4mpg is pretty decent, as are 119g/km CO2 emissions. The 2.0-litre diesel can have 134 or 182bhp and is fitted with four-wheel drive as standard. Both accelerate strongly, but the more powerful version is less economical and more costly to tax for now. Most models are available with an automatic gearbox – the turbocharged petrol and 1.7-litre diesel get a seven-speed dual-clutch system, while four-wheel-drive models get a conventional six-speed automatic. Image 5 of 37Key facts and figures for the Kia Sportage SUV It's wise to choose an engine that lets you get the most out of the Sportage, because its responses and handling are very good for an SUV. It resists body lean in corners, yet its suspension isn't so firm that it can't soak up imperfections. This means passengers can travel in comfort and – thanks to good suppression of road noise – relative quietness. Occupants should enjoy their surroundings, too. The interior of the Sportage is of a notably higher quality than was found in Kias of old, and there's plenty of space, too, especially in the back. We found the seats supportive and the dashboard to be classy and well built, while there's no shortage of storage, either inside the car or in the practical boot. Trim levels are straightforward, being named 1, 2, 3 and 4, while four-wheel drive adds a KX prefix. The Sportage range is now bigger than it's ever been before and models at the very top end of the price list do look expensive – encroaching on the territory of premium rivals like the Audi Q3 and BMW X1. But there's no denying the Sportage is a lot of car for the money.
